Rich Ginger Bread

Rub a pound of butter
into a pound of flour, grate
the rind of a lemon;
add half a pound of powder
sugar and two ounces of
ground ginger. Mix all
well together, and make it
into a paste, with three
quarters of a pound of treacle
and a glass of Brandy;
roll it thin and bake it
on tins in a cool oven
add a quarter of a pound
of candied peel. Cut small.
